BEARNEFACTOR 2015

On Saturday 2nd May we took a team of 7 up to the impressive Allan Higgs centre. Home to the Lemmings Luau tournament this venue is perfect for Ultimate, with high ceilings and 3g surface we new it would be a good one.

On arrival we were surprised that the pitches were marked up a lot smaller than we were used to at Luau but this may help us with the indoor game we are used to. Our team was made up of Jon, Stan, Jacob, Greg, lily, Matt and James.

We did not have to wait long to find out. First up was Shakesbears Thromeo, not a team I had encountered before. We started well with a quick score with myself throwing a hammer for Jacob to intercept in the end zone. They responded quickly however we traded up to three. On three a piece they seemed to settle and went on to win 6-3.

We were quite please with our performance as we are always slow starters, however really think it was a winnable game.

Next up was Care Bears where again we got the first score, but it was to be a short lived experience as it was soon apparent that Care Bears were a very good side and would go on to reach the final later that day. We went on to score a couple more late in the game but it was only consolation goals, going down 8-3.

After a short break our last pool game was against Kittenzoom. This was a really close game only losing by one point, final score 5-4.

So bottom of the group we were and after lunch we would meet one of the three Barbearians teams. Again a very close game but this time recorded our first win of the weekend with thanks to some amazing defence from Jon with three successive Ds in our end zone, along with Jacob pulling the strings and making all the right calls on the line. We were starting to look like a team and won 5-4.

Next up was Bounce another new team for us. They were from the Warwick Malaysian University and were very quick and organised. Their man marking was incredible but we broke them down notably the best play of the game with a great cut from Stan down the line to set up a great score. This seemed to inspire us and we went on to win 7-5 setting up a plate final with Kittenzoom.

The kittens unfortunately had not lost there zoom and at this point I think we were starting to tire. It was once again a close game where we would only lose by one point. There was again some amazing plays with Greg making an audacious bid with a layout but it was not to be.

I must say the whole tournament was played in the best spirit I think I have ever encountoud, perhaps this was down to it being a charity event?

MVP: Jacob and Greg. MIP: James. Most Spirited player: Matt & Jon
